With awareness about and incidence of ASD rising, more and more parents are concerned about their child’s development.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for accessing appropriate interventions and improving long-term outcomes.
ASD is characterized by a range of challenges in social communication, repetitive and restrictive behaviors, sensory sensitivities, and motor difficulties. It is important to note that autism is not a single disorder but rather a spectrum, meaning that individuals with ASD can present with a wide range of strengths and challenges. Further, there are many other factors that may mimic ASD behaviors. Teasing apart all the options and “getting it right” is critical to get the right services.
At BRAINS, we are committed to providing comprehensive, compassionate, and individualized autism assessment services that empower individuals of any age and their families.
What Sets BRAINS Apart?
Our approach to autism assessment is unique in several ways. Our assessment team is highly specialized in all diagnostic domains, not just autism. Neuropsychological underpinnings mean we evaluate how the brain influences behavior within the social, family, and educational history of the person. This requires more than checklists or one test. Rather, ruling in and ruling out all possible diagnoses takes more expertise than just looking for symptoms that fit one diagnosis. Within our specialized AAEC clinic (Approved Autism Evaluation Center with Blue Cross and Blue Shield), we employ a multidisciplinary team of experts, including psychologists and speech-language pathologists. And consult with occupational therapy and behavioral therapists as needed. This collaborative approach ensures we gather a complete picture of a person’s strengths and challenges. And, provide not just an accurate diagnosis, but customized treatment plan and resources for the family.
We understand that those with autism, as with anyone with developmental or behavioral challenges, need to be understood and provided support. We also understand that each person is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to an autism diagnosis. Because of this, our assessment process focuses on understanding the individual’s unique perspective and celebrating their strengths.
A Comprehensive and Individualized Assessment
Our assessment process is comprehensive and tailored to the specific needs of each individual. We utilize a variety of assessment tools, such as the ADOS-2, ADI-R, and CARS-2, along with standardized, age-based normative tests to evaluate different domains of development, including communication, social interaction, and restricted/repetitive behaviors.
In addition to standardized assessments, we conduct observations in various settings, such as play-based interactions and structured tasks. We also gather valuable information from parents/caregivers through interviews and developmental history reviews.
Recognizing that autism frequently co-occurs with other conditions, we consider the possibility of ADHD, anxiety, sleep disorders, depression, intellectual disability, epilepsy, and BPD. We also assess for sensory processing differences and motor difficulties, which are often present in autistic individuals.
To understand a person’s functional abilities and support needs, we evaluate adaptive behaviors and gather information about daily functioning. While IQ testing is not used to identify autism, we may assess cognitive abilities to provide a comprehensive understanding of the individual’s profile.
