Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

The effectiveness of ABA therapy in producing long-lasting behavior change with individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders has been well-documented in thousands of published research studies over the last several decades. Research has shown that almost half of children who receive early, intensive behavioral intervention before age 3 years will be virtually indistinguishable from their same-age peers by the time they reach Kindergarten (Lovaas, 1987). This positive behavior change has also been shown to last well into adolescence.

ABA can help children as young as 18-months old diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder reach their potential through increasing pro-social behaviors (e.g., language and communication skills, play skills, social skills, academic skills), improving functional daily living (e.g., brushing teeth, toileting, bathing, dressing), teaching self-control and coping strategies, and generalizing skills across different people and environments.

BRAINS ABA clients must live within a 20-mile radius of BRAINS. Service within this radius is dependent upon behavior analyst and technician availability to provide one-on-one ABA therapy for 10-40 hours per week. Sessions will occur in the client’s home, with occasional sessions in the community and at BRAINS as needed.

Children covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance must have an existing autism spectrum disorder diagnosis from an Approved Autism Evaluation Center (AAEC). To schedule an AAEC Evaluation at BRAINS, please call 616-365-8920. For more information on AAEC, visit

Supervision of each child’s program will be provided by our Program Director and other Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA). Program administrators will be responsible for program development, staff training, implementation, and monitoring. Board Certified Behavior Analysts will also collaborate with families in the development of the program, supervise ongoing therapy, and will provide families with regular formal progress reviews.
